About 54% of Chicago's occupied homes are rented, and only a quarter of its housing is single-family detached, per the U.S. Census Bureau's 2020–2024 American Community Survey. Chicago has no rental license or registration. Its Residential Landlord and Tenant Ordinance sets deposit rules stricter than Illinois law: the deposit has to sit in an interest-bearing account at an Illinois institution named in the lease, you owe the tenant a signed receipt and interest every year, and the deposit is due back within 45 days. The ordinance doesn't cover a building of six units or fewer that the owner lives in, though a few of its tenant protections still apply there.
